Clitics and Clause Structure: The Late Medieval Greek System

چکیده

In Condoravdi & Kiparsky 2001 we traced two paths of grammaticalization in the evolution of Greek clause structure: the reduction of Wackernagel (X) clitic pronouns to word-level affixes via an intermediate stage of word-level (X) clitics, and the emergence of auxiliaries and mood markers as heads of new functional projections. The two trajectories are connected in that the positioning of X clitic pronouns responds to changes in the clausal syntax, thereby providing a diagnostic for the emergence of the articulated Infl projection previously posited for standard Modern Greek (Tsimpli 1995, Tsimpli & Roussou 1996, Giannakidou 1998, among others), and confirmed by our findings for other modern dialects and for Late Medieval Greek.

Clitics and Clause Structure

In late Medieval Greek and many modern dialects, pronominal clitics are syntactically adjoined to an IP projection. In another set of dialects they have become syntactically adjoined to a verbal head. In the most innovating dialects (which include Standard Greek) they are agreement affixes. Extending the Fontana/Halpern clitic typology, we propose a trajectory of lexicalization from X clitics v...

Correlation with Null Objects?

There is a wide consensus in the literature on language acquisition that functional elements are acquired late, although there is crosslinguistic variation with respect to those elements that are produced later and to the rates of omission for different languages (see Radford 1994, Guasti 2002 for relevant data and for a review of the literature). Since pronominal clitics are elements whose syn...
